La- Familia was started in 2002 by brothers JC and Mandela Cordeta, They began rhyming in the early 90's, Jc born in 1989 and Mandela was born in 1990. Their father, John Cordeta was a member of the Oregon Army National Guard Army Band and took the boys on tour with the band and him every summer for 10 years traveling to every city in Oregon and countless cities around the NorthWest. La Familia was started by jc and mandela cordeta in 2002 teaching and mentoring countless male youth in the community.

Although they had many students, the Cordeta's cousin Robert Sabb aka Tripp Duggy of Blackmarket and cousin Corey Fowler aka C Smoove of Cali Swag District were by far the high achievers of the La Familia Academy, with their swallow their pride attitudes and open highly curious minds they were able to inject the Cordeta's love for music in their blood.
Even though their cousin's were not ready to do so, jc and mandela would go to the recording studio every week day and countless weekends, learning to produce instrumentals, record and engineer vocals using a number of software's and completing projects on deadlines. If the studio was closed(Salvation Army and Ethos) they would record on cassette tapes at home.
