Late 2006 Bert Bruines (form. Soaptrip, Drive Cooler) was looking to create a fresh new band next to his solo outing Velvet Sea. His internet ad caught the attention of Martijn Vink (form. Slurf, Stretcher, The Light Brigade). Ben Pieper, a fellow Zwolle musician to Bert joined soon after. With help from befriended in-promptu drummers rehearsals started and songs were starting to develop. However only when Ben van de Bunt (Stonetown Frogs) joined mid 2007 the band really found its form and was named Breitner.

Breitner is about alt. country, tuneful pop, rock and singer-songwriter sounds.

Influences are diverse, ranging from 50’s and 60’s pop to 90's alternative/shoegazer/noise like Ride and Dinosaur Jr, with a healthy dose of Americana twang thrown in. Bert Bruines is the principal songwriter and most songs start from his acoustic demos. However from there they can develop in many directions, from laidback singer-songwriter songs to haunting noisepop/rock or anywhere inbetween.
