Antonio Nobrega

Antonio Nóbrega was born in Recife, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1952. A violinist since his early childhood, at the end of the sixties, he joined the Orquestra Sinfônica do Recife. He was then invited by the prominent Brazilian writer Ariano Suassuna to form the Quinteto Armorial, which would become the most important group to create a Brazilian folk-style classical chamber music. From 1976 on, Nóbrega developed his own style, combining theater, dance and music.

Subsequently, he has presented the shows "A Bandeira do Divino", "A Arte da Cantoria", "Maracatu Misterioso", "Mateus Presepeiro", "O Reino do Meio Dia", "Figural", "Brincante", "Segundas Histórias" and "Na Pancada do Ganz". Nóbrega has had great successes in Brazil and worldwide, winning the Shell, APCA, and the Mambembe prizes. In 1997, he launched "Madeira Que Cupim Não Rói", based on the CD with the same name, touring through major Brazilian cities. In 1998, he launched "Pernambuco Falando Para o Mundo", once again based on a CD.

In 1999, he participated in the d'Avignon Festival in France with "Pernambouc", a show developed for the French public. In 2000, Nóbrega opened "O Marco do Meio Dia", in Lisbon, Portugal. This show was sponsored by the National Commission to Celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Brazilian Discovery. The show toured Paris, Hannover, and several Brazilian cities.

The year 2002 was marked by "Lunário Perpétuo", the show and the CD. One year later, Walter Carvalho directed a DVD featuring Nóbrega, entitled "Lunário Pepétuo". For 2004, the main projects included a large Brazilian tour of "Lunário Perpétuo" and "Figural", and a recording, together with Rosane Almeida, of the project Danças Brasileiras, which was a TV series made for the Canal Futura, and consisted of folk dancers and musicians interacting with communities around Brazil. Currently, Antonio Nóbrega and Rosane Almeida direct Brincante, which is a cultural space, theater and school in São Paulo.
