AW! began as a band where people weren't interested in doing music as
much as to do experiments. Those experiments were about how to make music
unconsciously and that idea held on thru to present days. Nevertheless,
then we had one advantage .. we were WE ! I mean, the number of members was continuous, but we were numerous ... approx. 12- 20, and none of those
members were continuously involved in the project but one : N.Pavel.

approx. 12- 20, and none of those members were continuously involved in the project but one : N.Pavel. Pavel and I actually were the founders of the band, but as the time passed by he decided to leave the project so, he could do more work of his own in the Industrial Design (drawings, and projects of his own style). Anyway, with or without him there were continuous line-up changes...from song to song.
We actually recorded one from that period, and we done that with kind permission of the band Kakofonija (where I played the guitar at the time) to use some of their time in the studio while they're recorded their demo. That was 1994. in the studio Fokus (Belgrade). We did actually two songs : 1 Zashto me boli to biva ludo,a .. 2 ..Prijatno!.
First song was recorded like an endless session were we played on various instruments , and it lasted aprox. 16 mins. on tape. The second one is the end of the recording as we thought it should be end up well , and it consists of one happy GROK! like some of you do when you drink too much beer or eat something that ...
well , you know... Anyway,that recording we published on split tape w/Jedni Od Mnogih. It was one of the many (as the original bands name sais) Belgrade noise bands that were playing only for nearest friends and themselves.The band that emerged from the one of the very good grind-core bands in Belgrade at the time ( Disfigured and Hemorrhoid ). Something like Buka (of Patareni ).
Anyway, that tape had great success in underground circles. People were asking to hear something new from us , but we weren't serious about the AW! band so, we did nothing except havin' a good time together. O.K. sometimes we gathered to do something but we haven't done something that we considered worthy to put it on the LP. Next time we spent organizing the LP, but than we realized that those were only the parts of the experiments that we did in the past period.
At the end yet we decided to do that LP, so we called it : Zelim! ( I Want! )'coz that was the period of our lives when we were full of expectations and the world around us seemed to lose all the will to give us anything. I'll explain it in few words : Belgrade - Serbia - Yugoslavia.That's were we live and you must say that that environment isn't much "healthy" now , as it wasn't then. Everything you try - it is very hard to do it. So, you can think of some hopeful teenagers, that were banging for a band and studying art design school ...
much future we had than ... So, those were the stories in those days. Actually , all songs were experiments like new music forms .. on the very edge to the noise. We made instruments ourselves.
Many instruments were very likely to those Einsturzende Neubauten had at their first period ( Kollaps - Halber Mensch ). But there was the usual instruments like the guitar or usual drumset. Anyway, we put the 12 tracks on that LP , and all of 'em were special in their own way , cause they emerged from our minds from time to time thru the long period of time (1994/96). Than we did some remixing .. at the time I were very interested in the machines ... you know , seqeuncers, semlping machines , drum machines , and so ... Those remixes appear on the next split w/ Skattor Minox , did in 1996.
soon after the LP. After that we had a little break. No one cared about the band , but only school. That year we were supposed to enter the Academy of Contemporary Arts , and all of us were in the competition that no one was "spared".It is very hard to get in there, I mean the Academy, so we had worked hard. And still, no one cared about the band.
Then in spring 1997 we totally vanished as a band. It was me who's only left, so I took a look into "what can my PC offer me to start again with music" and, here "we" are again .. In fact , I'm back and AW! lives . Then I started experimenting in some programs for making music on my PC .. I took some of my CD favorites (GODFLESH) and did some mixing ..
Then occurred to me an idea to do a split w/Skattor Minox again. I explained to him how could be great if he would had some of his favorites and done some mixing... ... Skattor ( today called, DJ Vrhovny ) replied that that was a great idea and split LP : " I live again" has been born! Soon after that DJ Vrhovny did the V/A : Missed calls (for CfA) , and two of my songs from that period are on it. Those are two "new breed" songs.
I call 'em that name 'coz they're done with my PC , and those two represents of new period in AW! is coming on .. but not SO new , coz it's all in the first philosophy : Do it unconsciously and do it experimenting new ways to get music. In this new style, I'm a little bit into COLDCUT's philosophy .. I think you know NINJA TUNE label , so they say : FUCK DANCE , LETS ART ! And it's like it , believe me. Now I'm into arranging new LP named PIECES ..
It's all made up of pieces so, I though it could be o.k. if I name it like that. Nevertheless, I did one single before the LP named BUTTERFLIES. It's the solo guitar tune revealed in new environment , and it tells a story of this world as he might be if we don't look after it well.
On the other side ,in the meantime, band Kakofonija split up and some of the fans asked for new LP . Than I thought of doing the songs of Kakofonija that were never recorded at the studio. I sat in front my PC and did some mixing, playing & programming , and I recorded "new" Kakofonija songs .. but , as you know, two songs are not enough to build the LP fans asked for.
So, I asked my friends, to do some of their own mixing on the theme of one of the "new" tracks ... they agreed, and I was delighted to hear those mixes after coz they were great ! Than we did the LP : Tribute to Kakofonija - NIGHTLP (for CfA). On the CD you can find AW! doing the old ("new") Kakofonija songs, and in the mixes as well, in the mixes there are DJ Vrhovny , Butterfly (the band from my neighborhood) , Sunplant , ... o, yes , ..
when we were doing that mixing , I did some tracks w/Sunplant , as the band Together. We were alone on both sides - Sunplant is one man band, and AW! is one man band, so we were "Together". Actually we haven't done nothing seriously , a couple of tracks, but they're kicking, and worth mentioning. If we ever comlete the project, it might be great LP, but we'll see ...
