Formed in 2005 at the California Institute of the Arts, the A-Tribute Ensemble largely focuses on performances utilizing improvisational forms. (The group is currently active in the Los Angeles area.) Borrowing ideas from jazz, folk, pop, world, and classical musics, the group performs eclectically within a wide variety of styles, ranging from the old to the new, familiar and unfamiliar. Since its conception, the ensemble has had an unorthodox approach to music making, utilizing rhythmic phasing, 12-tone techniques, metric modulations, formal constructions (including charts and scores from the classical repertoire) within a largely improvisational context. The ensemble is also interested in multi-disciplinary approaches to art, and has participated in dance, theater, film, poetry, puppet theater, animation, and other forms of multi-media projects.
The group consists of Melinda Rice on violin, Chris Votek on cello, and Ryan Tanaka on piano.
